The Ainos were the people who inhabited the Japanese islands before those we now know as the Japanese people invaded them. The Ainos had a very special tattoo tradition.

They used very simple and bold graphic designs - and the women were tattooed around the mouth. It started when they got their first menstruation, and was expanded a little at a time, until completed with the two lines at the corner of the mouth which made them look like they were always smiling. The final was done as they were married.
